Notetaking
Notetaking services are an accommodation available to students with notetaking accommodations on their plan. More information about developing an accommodation plan can be found here: Getting Started.
The two most common notetaking accommodations are audio recording using notetaking software (Genio Notes) and peer notetakers.
Notetaking Software
Genio (formerly Glean) creates beautifully simple learning tools that boost knowledge, skills, and confidence. Genio Notes is a tool that allows you to not only audio record lectures; you can import lecture slides, attach quick notes and labels, and even draw handwritten notes.
If you would like to learn more about using Genio Notes, contact the Accessibility Resources office at ar@mnsu.edu.
Process for Requesting a Peer Notetaker
- After setting up your accommodations with Accessibility Resources staff, log in to your MavAccess account to request a peer notetaker for the class(es) you need.
- Accessibility Resources staff will contact your classmates directly to attempt to find a volunteer. We will make a good-faith effort to present the opportunity to your classmates.
- If an email is not sent to the class, email Alex at alex.lucier.2@mnsu.edu for follow-up.
- You will receive an email when a notetaker is found.
- Notes will be provided via the MavAccess portal in the Notetaking Services module. You will receive an email every time the notetaker uploads notes prompting you to go download them.
Keep in Mind:
- The name of the student requesting notes is kept confidential from the class and any volunteer notetakers.
- Contact Accessibility Resources as soon as possible when:
- You drop or withdraw from the course.
- You no longer need the services.
- The assigned notetaker has not uploaded notes, or the quality is inaccessible or poor.
- Notetaking services are NOT a substitute for class attendance. You must attend class, take notes, collect handouts, and participate in discussions.
- Please note: there is no a 100% guarantee that a peer notetaker can be secured. Talk to your Access Coordinator about adding Genio Notes to your plan as a backup.
