Accommodated Testing Guide

This guide explains how to take exams with testing accommodations through Accessibility Resources. It outlines how to schedule an exam, what to expect on test day, and important guidelines for testing in the Accessibility Resources testing space.

Testing accommodations are determined through an individualized, interactive process. Not all exams are taken with Accessibility Resources, and not all courses require testing outside the classroom.

What Are Testing Accommodations?

Testing accommodations help reduce disability‑related barriers during exams and assessments. Depending on individual access needs, testing accommodations may include adjustments such as:

  • Extended exam time
  • A reduced‑distraction testing environment
  • Assistive technology or academic technology
  • Alternative exam formats
  • Other individualized supports

Testing accommodations are approved through Accessibility Resources and communicated to instructors through the accommodation process. Not every exam requires the use of the Accessibility Resources testing space.

Scheduling an Exam with Accessibility Resources

If you are approved for testing accommodations and plan to take an exam in the Accessibility Resources testing space, you are responsible for scheduling your exam. Note: By scheduling to take your exam in Accessibility Resources, you agree to follow all procedures and policies.

How to Schedule an Exam

In general, scheduling an accommodated exam includes the following steps:

  1. Log in to MavAccess.
  2. Select Accommodated Testing on the left-side navigation bar.
  3. Choose the correct course in the dropdown.
  4. Select the exam date and start time that aligns with the class exam time, unless otherwise arranged with your instructor.
  5. Submit your exam request.

Scheduling Tips

  • Schedule to take the exam at the same time as your class. If there is a time conflict, schedule to start early, if possible. Otherwise, contact Accessibility Resources.
  • Schedule exams as early as possible, especially during midterms and finals.
    • The deadline for exams is three school days in advance.
    • The deadline for finals is one week in advance.
  • If it's before the deadline and MavAccess won't let you submit your request, contact Accessibility Resources for assistance.
  • If your instructor changes the exam date or format, update your request and notify Accessibility Resources.

If you are unsure whether an exam should be scheduled with Accessibility Resources or taken in the classroom, contact Accessibility Resources before the exam date.

What if My Exam Changes?

Contact Accessibility Resources as soon as possible if:

  • An exam date or time changes
  • The exam format changes (online → in-person, for example)
  • You need to cancel or reschedule your appointment

Early communication helps ensure your accommodations can be provided appropriately.

Where Exams May Take Place

Depending on the course, accommodations, and assessment format, exams may be administered:

  • In the Accessibility Resources testing space
  • In another approved location arranged between you and the instructor
  • For some exams with no set location, like for online courses, anywhere you wish

Your instructor or Accessibility Resources will confirm the appropriate location.

Instructor Role

Instructors receive official accommodation notifications through the AR process. Instructors are responsible for:

  • Completing the Test Proctoring Agreement (TPA)
  • Providing exam materials to Accessibility Resources
  • Communicating timing or format requirements
  • Coordinating make‑ups or exam changes when necessary

More detailed faculty guidance is available on the Information for Faculty & Staff page.
