The Maverick Diversity Institute offers challenging and unique workshops and programs that will help you to become knowledgeable on inclusivity, access, and equity in your workplace and classroom environment. In recognition of Sexual Assault Prevention & Awareness Month, VARP will be leading a trauma-informed care training. Trauma-informed care is secondary and tertiary prevention of sexual violence, gender-based violence, and violence that is experienced as a result of systemically reinforced discrimination and bias. Part of being trauma-informed is understanding the history of violence prevention’s foundation in DEIA movements, and that while an approach has standardized best practices, needs around safety and reporting are linked to intersectional identities, normative behaviors, social contracts, and codified laws.

This workshop will inform participants about the impacts of trauma and trauma-informed approaches around disclosures of sexual violence & abuse. In doing so, it will specifically move from a discussion of background and definitions, to self-care, understanding the physiological impacts of trauma, environmental strategies (spaces, active listening, questions that are helpful vs. harmful), and resources.
