Underrepresented/Minority Student Fellowship Opportunities

There are a wide variety of award opportunities available to students from underrepresented populations. See the PDF below for an initial list of opportunities. This list is only a starting point. There are many more awards available. Please email fellowships@mnsu.edu to set up an appointment if you're interested in pursuing one of these or discussing other opportunities.

Awards specifically designed for students from an underrepresented or minority population:

AICPA Accountemps Scholarships:

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • Must be enrolled full-time in order to be considered
  • See individual awards for specific eligibility

American Bar Association Legal Opportunity Scholarship Fund:

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • Open to racial and ethnic minority students applying to law school 

American Educational Research Association

  • Emphasis: Academic, Research
  • Open to candidates at the dissertation writing stage in their doctoral program and faculty at institutions of higher education

American Indian College Fund Full Circle Scholarship:

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • The Fund provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate American Indian/Alaska Native students. 

American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program:

  • Emphasis: Academic, Experiential
  • Open for candidates enrolled in graduate studies with interests related to ethnic minority psychology

American Sociological Association Minority Fellowship Program:

  • Emphasis: Academic, Research
  • Open to doctoral students in any sub-area or specialty within Sociology

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Fellowship Programs:

  • Emphasis: Research, Experiential
  • Open to master's holding Latino candidates with demonstrated commitment to public-service oriented activities

Cultural Vistas Fellowship:

  • Emphasis: Experiential, International
  • Open to candidates looking to enrich their academic learning through professional internships and immersion for eight weeks in Argentia, Germany, or Hong Kong.
  • Undergraduates enrolled at the Sophomore or Junior level are encouraged to apply

Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowships:

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • Open to Pre-Doctoral candidates interested in a career in teaching and research at the college or university level

Future Global Leaders Fellowship

  • Emphasis: Academic, Experiential, International
  • Open to first-year undergraduate students; highly motivated first-generation and low-income students with proven leadership abilities are encouraged to apply

Greenlining Institute Academy Policy or Legal Fellowship Programs:

  • Emphasis: Experiential
  • Policy Fellowship: Open to young leaders who have completed their undergraduate degrees
  • Legal Fellowship for leaders who have a completed law degree or admittance to California Bar.

Greenlining Institute Academy Fellowship Program – Summer Associates:

  • Emphasis: Experiential
  • Open to candidates at least 18 years of age with interest in policy-related issues and planning.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund:

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • Open to candidates of Hispanic heritage at any point in their higher education experience, including community college transfers to four year universities

National Association of Black Geoscientists:

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • Open to candidates pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Geoscience

National GEM Consortium

  • Emphasis: Academic, Research
  • Open to candidates of master's and PhD level programs in engineering and/or science related areas of study

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship Program

  • Emphasis: Academic, Research
  • Open to applicants enrolled in undergraduate study demonstrating "Exceptional Financial Need" as explained on the website

New York Theatre Workshop 2050 Fellowship:

  • Emphasis: Research, Experiential
  • Open to director and playwright candidates for a year-long fellowship

*Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans:

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • Open to immigrant applicants and children of immigrants at the senior level or within the first two years of graduate study

Public Policy & International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • Open to applicants in their junior year (*Some seniors may be eligible)

Steppenwolf Fellowship:

  • Emphasis: Experiential
  • Open to early-career people of color interested in working in theatre

Sloan Indigenous Graduate Partnership (SIGP):

  • Emphasis: Academic, Research
  • Open to American Indian/Alaska Native masters and doctoral candidates studying in a mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering related field

*Udall Scholarship (Native American Congressional Internship): 

  • Emphasis: Experiential 
  • Open to students enrolled at the undergraduate, graduate, or law level
  • Applicants must be Native American or Alaska Native

United Negro College Fund Scholarships:

  • UNCF manages dozens of award opportunities for high-achieving African American undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Various scholarship opportunities are available as listed on the website

 

Awards that strongly encourage students from underrepresented or minority populations to apply:

*Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship

  • Emphasis: Academic, Experiential, Other: Includes support for graduate degree, internships, professional development, and employment as a Foreign Service Office in the U.S. Department of State
  • Open to seniors and recent college graduates

*Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship

  • Emphasis: Academic, Language, Experiential, International
  • Open to seniors and college graduates that have not yet begun graduate school

USAID Donald M. Payne International Development Graduate Fellowship

  • Emphasis: Academic
  • Open to senior students at the undergraduate level

Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program:

  • Emphasis: Research, Experiential
  • Open to applicants in medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary, or specific graduate programs for a ten-week summer program with the CDC at one of six locations

Federal Diversity Internship Initiative

  • Emphasis: Experiential
  • Open to applicants looking for opportunities with selected government agencies
  • Summer program runs for 10 weeks while Spring and Fall programs run for 15 weeks

Manhattan Theatre Club Directing Fellowships

  • Emphasis: Experiential
  • Open to early to mid-career directors

Microsoft Research Fellowship

  • Emphasis: Academic, Research
  • Open to third year PhD students enrolled at a North American university
