Fraternity Recruitment
Primary contact for men interested in joining: Jack Knauer, Interfraternity Council VP of Recruitment, at jack.knauer@mnsu.edu
Most, but certainly not all, men joining a fraternity do so during their first year. We provide several opportunities for interested students to learn more and to determine if joining is something for them. There are two ways men join fraternities: Informal Recruitment and Structured Recruitment. Read on to find out more about both.
Informal Recruitment
Men may join a fraternity at any time after they have graduated from high school and committed to attending the university. Many of our fraternities will be hosting events and recruiting new members throughout the course of the summer, leading up to the beginning of the Fall semester. New first-year or transfer students should not be surprised if they receive a phone call or email with invitations to meet with fraternities or to attend events. This is normal!
Chapters will also host informal recruitment events once the Fall semester starts. If a student, including a new, incoming student, finds a good fit, it is perfectly ok for him to join a fraternity before physically arriving on campus. Continuing students already enrolled are also eligible to join during the Summer.
Informal Recruitment is the only way to join a fraternity during the Spring Semester.
A majority of men who join fraternities do so through Informal Recruitment.
Fall 2025 Recruitment
Join the Ultimate College Experience. Our fraternity chapters host both formal and informal recruitment events at the start of the year. So come and meet us and have some fun!
Our community-wide recruitment events include the following:
- Thursday, August 28, 3-6 p.m., MSU Mall (Large Patio Between the Fountain and Armstrong Hall)
- Yard Games with the Fraternities: Come meet members of all of our fraternities, and get to know other students with free food and yard games. It's a fun time!
- Tuesday, September 2, 8-10 p.m., CSU Bullpen (Bowling Alley in Lower Level of CSU)
- Bullpen Night: Free Bowling and Billiards in the Maverick Bullpen. Meet members of our fraternities and sororities, and get your questions answered.
These events are designed to be come-and-go-as-you-please, so you do not have to show up at the beginning, and you don't have to stay for the whole time. There is no dress code for these events. If they haven't joined or decided to participate already, it's often these events that help guys decide to go through with the recruitment process, whether structured or informal.
You can contact us for more information or to have your contact information shared with our fraternity and sorority chapters.
structured Recruitment
Structured recruitment allows potential new members to meet each of the fraternities, with the help of Recruitment Counselors ("Bro Chis") who are current members. The process is designed to ensure the best possible fit into a lifetime of brotherhood.
Requirements for joining through the Fraternity Structured Recruitment Process
- Attend Both Nights of "House Tours" and visit all chapters.
- Attend "Preference Day" at 2 chapters
- Receive your bids and select one.

Any man joining a fraternity must be an MSU student (or incoming student) who has graduated from high school and who has a minimum 2.5 GPA. The GPA used for determining eligibility is the cumulative high school GPA for any student who has not yet taken any college courses since graduating from high school. For any student who has taken college courses since graduating from high school, the cumulative college GPA is considered.
