Fraternity & Sorority Life Parents & Families

Joining a Fraternity or Sorority is an important decision for your student. Understand why you should be informed about what they're getting into!

Parents & Families

Joining a fraternity or sorority is an important decision, and families play an important role in supporting students as they explore membership. We encourage parents and families to learn more about the Fraternity & Sorority Life community so they can better understand the opportunities, expectations, and support systems available to their student.

When a student joins a fraternity or sorority at MSU, they become part of a community of nearly 300 members. This community provides opportunities for personal growth, professional development, leadership, service, academic support, and lifelong connections. These experiences can help students build confidence, strengthen their campus involvement, and prepare for success beyond college.

There are often misconceptions about fraternity and sorority life, but today’s members are committed to academics, community service, leadership development, and creating meaningful relationships. Membership provides students with a network of peers who support one another and encourage personal responsibility, involvement, and achievement.

Families are encouraged to stay engaged in their students’ experience. Ask questions, learn about the organization your student is interested in, and talk with them about the responsibilities and benefits of membership. Many chapters host family events or offer opportunities for families to connect with the organization. Your support can help your student make the most of their fraternity or sorority experience.
