CETL Multi-modal Teaching Certificate
Course Overview
The CETL Multi-modal Teaching Certificate is a focused professional development program that equips faculty with the skills, strategies, and tools needed to design and deliver high quality courses across in-person‑ and synchronous online modalities. Participants will learn how to create equivalent learning experiences, integrate active and accessible teaching practices, and build community across modalities.
Course Learning Outcomes
In this course, we will explore concepts related to multi-modal technology and design. We will also apply these concepts to create a flexible course design plan in our own contexts. The course has the following learning outcomes:
- Design course content that supports both in-person and synchronous online learners while maintaining alignment with approved course learning outcomes.
- Create learning activities that provide equivalent opportunities for all students—whether participating in person or online—to achieve the same course learning outcomes.
- Develop course materials and learning activities that meet accessibility expectations and support diverse learners.
- Organize and integrate all course materials, activities, and assessments within D2L to ensure consistent access for both in-person and synchronous online students.
- Apply active learning strategies that engage students equitably across in-person and synchronous online modalities.
- Implement instructional practices that foster meaningful interaction and a shared sense of community between students participating in physical and virtual spaces.
Program Format
-
The course will be available in D2L on a rolling basis beginning April 1, 2026.
-
A schedule of final course material review dates by CETL staff will be posted on D2L. Participants are required to complete all coursework by these review dates, and complete a technological demonstration session (as mentioned below) to be awarded a certificate.
- Weekly coursework and the final assignment due dates and deadlines will be posted on D2L and communicated through the course announcements page.
-
Certificates and completion badges will be issued after CETL staff review and approve course material submitted for completion.
-
This course is offered in an asynchronous mode on D2L and can be completed in a self-paced style.
-
There are short reflection activities for Modules 1 to 4, with Module 5 designed for submission of a D2L shell course for review by CETL staff. Module 5 is required for completion of this course.
-
Additionally, participants will also have to attend one technological demonstration session facilitated by the Academic Technology Service team of ITS, that will cover questions and concerns on D2L course design and teaching via Zoom classrooms.
-
Dates for the technological demonstration will be shared via the announcement page of D2L as the course becomes available on April 1st.
-
Faculty who have previously completed one of the following courses are welcome to request an exemption from this requirement by submitting documentation of completion.
*Modalities: The modalities will be only Online Synchronous and In-Person. Faculty are welcome to post class recordings, etc., but the course will not be advertised or understood to allow online asynchronous completion
*Student Registration: Students will register for the section in their preferred modality. Students will not be able to alternate modalities at will—if they would like to move to the other modality for the bulk of their engagement, they would need to change their registration to the other section.
