Academic Recovery Advising

Getting Back on Track

Academic challenges can happen to any student. Whether you are experiencing Academic Warning, Academic Probation, or returning after Academic Suspension, Academic Recovery Advising is here to help you develop a plan, connect with resources, and move forward with confidence.

At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we believe academic setbacks are opportunities for growth. Many successful students have faced challenges during their college journey and gone on to graduate and achieve their goals.

Through individualized support, students gain a better understanding of their academic standing, identify barriers to success, and develop strategies for improvement.

What is Academic Recovery Advising?

Academic Recovery Advising is a structured support process designed to specifically advise students who are not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards.

We work with students who:

  • Are on Academic Warning
  • Are on Academic Probation
  • Are at risk of Academic Suspension
  • Have been academically suspended and are returning to the university

Students work one-on-one with an advisor to:

  • Understand their academic standing and SAPs requirements
  • Identify barriers that may be affecting academic performance
  • Develop a personalized recovery plan
  • Connect with academic, personal, and wellness resources
  • Monitor progress throughout the semester
  • Build skills for long-term success

Our goal is not only to help students recover academically, but also to help students develop habits and strategies that support success throughout their college experience.

Academic Challenges Are More Common Than You Might Think

College brings new expectations and responsibilities, and many students experience academic challenges at some point.

Common factors include:

  • Difficulty adjusting to college expectations
  • Time management challenges
  • Changes in motivation or academic goals
  • Personal or family responsibilities
  • Financial concerns
  • Physical or mental health challenges
  • Balancing employment and coursework
  • Uncertainty about major or career direction

Experiencing academic difficulty does not mean you do not belong at the university or cannot be successful here. Seeking support early is one of the most effective ways to get back on track.

Recovery looks different for every student. Some return to Good Academic Standing after one semester, while others remain on continued probation as they make steady progress. Advisors help students stay focused, adjust strategies when needed, and celebrate achievements along the way.

Understanding Academic Standing

Students may encounter different academic standing classifications during their academic journey.

Academic Warning

Academic Warning serves as an alert that academic performance has fallen below university expectations and improvement is needed.

Academic Probation

Academic Probation indicates that a student has not yet met the requirements to return to Good Academic Standing but has met the requirements to remain eligible to persist.

Academic Suspension

Academic Suspension occurs when academic performance does not sufficiently improve. Students may be eligible to appeal or return following the suspension period according to university policy.

For complete information, see the Undergraduate Catalog and Academic Standing policies.
