Course leader Steve Gilbert continues exploration of early modern English history with Part II of the course he began last fall with The Tudors. This time, we turn to the fascinating and often astonishing Stuart dynasty. The centerpiece of the course will be twenty-five 30-minute lectures from the Great Courses course "History of England from the Tudors to the Stuarts" by Professor Robert Bucholz. The lectures will be supplemented with host-curated videos and occasional readings exploring Stuart life, politics, religion, science, art, music and the remarkable personalities of the era. We’ll also watch and discuss a feature film set during the Stuart period.

The lectures and supplemental materials will be presented over 14 meetings. Don’t worry if you can’t make them all—you’re welcome to join us whenever you can.

The Stuart story has everything you could want in a history course: kings and queens, religious conflict, civil war, the execution of a king, the restoration of the monarchy, political intrigue and the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Beneath all the drama is a bigger story—the struggle over who should govern and the emergence of ideas about Parliament, constitutional government, individual liberties and the rule of law that helped shape the modern political world and eventually America.
