WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR COLLEGE MAJOR?
I was raised by my grandmother who had endless reservoirs of selflessness. I was also fortunate to have great teachers and coaches who took a special interest in me. Thus, being a teacher and coach was an easy choice. The hardest part was deciding what subject and age group to teach.
WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT ADVISING?
As a first-generation, low-income college student, my education had a profound impact on my happiness and standard of living. Thus, it is natural I “dove back into the pool” as soon as I exited. I taught in K-12 for 17 years before jumping into higher education, where I have been for the last 8 years. I have served as an accommodations coordinator working with students with disabilities. I have also worked in higher education as an assistant coach, recruiter, retention specialist, tutor center coordinator, and advisor. I especially enjoy the role that advisors play in students’ success.
As the Assistant Director, my goals include:
- sharing my knowledge of university processes,
- helping students become increasingly independent in their educational journey,
- always remembering that college can sometimes be confusing (and an advisor can help!),
- learning every day and continuing to love the work of advising.
Fun fact
I grew 7 inches during my freshman year of college. I may have grown even more as a person, though.
