Description

This program prepares graduate students to enter the health care field of athletic training. Athletic Trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians, and other health care professionals to provide services that include injury/illness prevention, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions sustained or exacerbated by participation in athletics and other physical activity. ATs work under the direction of physicians, as prescribed by state regulatory statutes. ATs are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals, who fall under the allied health professions category as defined by Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Program Application Information

The Athletic Training program has a rolling application deadline.  Review of completed applications will begin on the priority review date of November 1st. The program will continue to review applications as program space permits until May 1st.  Please note that the first two courses for each new cohort begin the second summer session with an online course for HP 606 and a hybrid course (majority online with one week of labs on campus) for HP 607.

Athletic Training Computerized Application Service (ATCAS): This service allows the applicant to use a web-based process to apply to the Minnesota State program. There is a fee (charged by ATCAS) for this application service. Students applying for admission to the MSAT program must apply to the program via the ATCAS. Admission requirements/prerequisites (below) to assure applicants have completed or are in the process of completing the prerequisite requirements.

Minimum Application Requirements:

1. “C” or better in all required prerequisite courses (below)

2. 3.0 overall undergraduate GPA

3. Current certification in emergency care which includes: Adult & Pediatric CPR, AED, 2nd Rescuer CPR, Airway Obstruction, and Barrier Devices (e.g., pocket mask, bag valve mask)

4. Personal statement to include how the student became interested in the profession of athletic training and the MSAT program, their career goals, and any previous experiences with athletic training.

5. Two letters of recommendation/evaluation: one must be from from an academic advisor or faculty member indicating potential for graduate study, and the second should be from an individual who can assess the student's qualities as a graduate student and/or healthcare professional.

The following courses will be required as prerequisite courses from the student's undergraduate career:

  • Human Anatomy with laboratory
  • Human Physiology with laboratory or Human Anatomy and Physiology I and II with labs
  • Structural and Biomechanical Kinesiology (combined or separate courses at the 300+ level) OR 200 level (or higher) physics may substitute for the biomechanics course
  • Exercise Physiology course
  • Statistics or Tests and Measurements course
  • General Nutrition course
  • General Psychology course
  • Chemistry course beyond introductory chemistry
  • Personal or Public Health course

International applicants are required to meet the Department of Human Performance minimal internet TOEFL score of 80 or the equivalent academic  IELTS overall of 6.5.

International applicants should also visit the International Student & Scholar Services website for additional services and requirements for international students such as university admission, immigration advising, forms, required health insurance, etc.

Following acceptance to the MSAT program, all students will be required to provide the following for final admission:

  1. Completed Immunization and Health History and Physical Forms (As a health care provider documentation of the following immunizations are required MMR, Tdap, TB screening (Mantoux), Hep B and varicella (chicken pox) 
  2. Completed Technical Standards Form for athletic training document 
  3. Completed/signed statement of understanding and agreement of Program Policies
  4. Completed Criminal Background Check (see Criminal Background Check Policy)

Studying abroad is a transformative experience that has the power to challenge our thinking and our perspective on the world. This experiential course will help you become a global citizen, develop intercultural competence, and enhance your abilities to work in health-related fields with diverse clients and patients. Specifically, we will be participating in intercultural activities before the study abroad and several cultural immersion activities while abroad (e.g., participating in a traditional cultural ceremony).

Principles of the etiology, pathology, assessment, recognition, and development of a treatment and referral plan for lower body injuries/illnesses suffered by athletes and physically active individuals. This includes the foot, ankle, lower leg, knee, thigh, hip, pelvis, and lumbar spine. This course is designed for graduate athletic training students.

Principles of the etiology, pathology, assessment, recognition, and development of a treatment and referral plan for upper body injuries/illnesses suffered by athletes and physically active individuals. Theory, strategies, and best practices for teaching physical education to students with mental retardation, emotional/behavioral disorders, autism, attention deficit disorder, and multiple disabilities accompanying mental retardation.

The application of clinical assessment psychomotor skills will be applied during the supervised clinical experience component of the course. Assess physiological and activity-related risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, including compliance with ACSM physical activity guidelines and sedentary time. Critique models for examining metabolic responses to exercise at different domains of exercise intensity. Apply various prescription models for enhancing aerobic power and anaerobic capacity. Examine the role of cytokines for augmenting or attenuating oxidative stress. Conceptualize how exercise or thermoregulation alters peripheral and central vascular control and pressure-volume regulation of the heart.

Topics in Youth Physical Activity and Sport (3 semester credits) is a graduate level course that will focus on three major topics. The first topic will cover youth physical activity and sedentary behavior, examining past and current perspectives. The second focuses on physical activity and sport programs in school and community settings. The third examines major issues that separate youth from adults in the physiology of exercise, training, and sport programming.

The theory and application of the use of physical therapeutic modalities including cyrotherapy and thermotherapy, ultrasound, phonophoresis, electrical nerve stimulation, iontophoresis, diathermy, intermittent compression, traction, LASER, massage and manual therapies in the treatment of injury/illnesses suffered by athletes and physically active individuals. This course also includes the principles of tissue healing, pain and pain control. This course is designed for athletic training students.

This course will provide the student with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to rehabilitate and/or recondition athletic and physically active patients who suffer a wide variety of injury, both surgical and non-surgical, associated with their activity(ies). The theory and application of rehabilitation and reconditioning techniques includes retraining strength, power and endurance, restoration of flexibility and range of motion, activity specific conditioning, proprioception and balance, and agility. This course provides understanding and application of the psychology of sport and injury. Topics include psychological concerns, psycho-social antecedents of injury, psychological skills to implement with patients who are injured as a result of participation in athletics and physical activity.
