MANKATO, Minn. — Acclaimed New Orleans pianist, vocalist and songwriter John “Papa” Gros will bring the unmistakable spirit and sound of the Crescent City to Halling Recital Hall at Minnesota State University, Mankato, 320 Maywood Avenue, on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. The concert is presented by the Music Performance Series at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
A longtime fixture of the New Orleans music scene, Gros is known for a vibrant musical style that draws from funk, rhythm and blues, soul, rock and the rich piano traditions of New Orleans. His performances combine infectious grooves, soulful vocals and commanding keyboard work with the warmth and spontaneity that are hallmarks of New Orleans music.
Gros spent more than a decade as the leader of the celebrated New Orleans funk band, Papa Grows Funk, building an international following through extensive touring and acclaimed live performances. As a solo artist, he continues to carry the musical traditions of his hometown forward while adding his own contemporary voice.
Audiences can expect an energetic and engaging performance that moves easily from rolling New Orleans piano and deep funk grooves to soulful ballads and rhythm-and-blues favorites.
