12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Tou SaiK will perform Hip Hop songs and his new Spoken Word Piece about being Asian in America: “The Hostile Remodeled Minority Report”.

This presentation will be delivered through storytelling, rhythmic allegories and evidence of the inevitable. Tou SaiK speaks of his journey to understand his cultural identity through the collaborative performance duo with his grandma Youa Chang, relearning his native language through songs. Inspired by the historical struggles of his people, Tou SaiK focuses on his work with elders and young people with how contemporary arts can honor our traditional arts. Tou SaiK will spout how this artistic path led him to be a teaching artist in the schools and a community organizer in the neighborhood he grew up in: Frogtown. Tou SaiK's songwriting on Boom Bap Beats gave influence to social justice causes from Police Brutality to Asian American Experiences. Tou SaiK will reveal a growth of Indigenous branches he is currently climbing influenced by the diverse cultures of Twin Cities communities. Tou SaiK will also speak on the recent Anti-Asian Hate Crimes and how we can utilize creative expression to create counter-narratives to hurtful stereotypes.

Participants will experience enlightened discussion topics, writing activities about various issues that affect our communities, cultural identity, and storytelling of our truths. There will also be an emphasis on mental health and how arts can be a form of healing from trauma.
