While not the only time to join, Fall is the primary time for joining a sorority.
Fall 2020 informal Recruitment updated plan
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the MSU Sorority Community will not be hosting a formal recruitment process in 2020. Our recruitment process will take on a more informal look for this year, while still providing potential members the opportunity to make contact with our chapters and find their best fit!
The Panhellenic Council will host 6 sorority socials during the first four weeks of classes. These events will give Potential New Members (PNMs) the opportunity to meet and mingle with chapter representatives and to express their interest in joining, In order to join a chapter before October 1, any interested woman must attend at least one of these sorority socials. They may attend as many of them as they would like.
Chapters may make contact with and invite Potential New Members (PNMs) to informal recruitment events beginning Monday, August 3. If chapters provide us with their schedule of recruitment events, we will publish that information on the "Maverick FSL" Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as the Panhellenic Council Engage Page.
Chapters may extend bids (invitations to join) beginning Thursday, August 27. Prior to being able to be offered a bid, interested women must have attended one of the sorority socials listed below.
Please be aware: During informal recruitment, an interested woman may be offered more than one invitation to join. She is encouraged to take her time and make a decision she is comfortable with. Once she agrees to join one organization and signs the Membership Acceptance Card, she is bound to that organization and may not join another sorority. If she changes her mind and breaks that agreement prior to being fully initiated, she is ineligible to join any other sorority on campus until the next primary recruitment period (Fall 2021). Once fully initated, a woman will be ineligible to join any other sorority at any time.

Pre-registration is not required, but it is highly encouraged. If attendees do not pre-register, this information will be collected when they arrive for the event(s). Registration information will be shared with chapters so that they may contact the PNMs before and/or after sorority socials. There is no cost to participate in or attend a sorority social.
Typically, chapters require a 3.0 cumulative high school GPA or 2.5-3.0 cumulative college GPA, depending on whether the student is a first year student or a transfer/continuing MSU student. The requirements vary by chapter, with some being higher than others. Chapters very rarely make exceptions to their requirements, as exceptions may require approval from the organization's inter/national headquarters.
Our sororities require each member to be a full time college student (12 credits or more), and a fully matriculated student at MSU. This excludes PSEO, CIS, etc.
Formal Recruitment (NOT BEING OBSERVED IN FALL 2020)
Sororities at MSU take pride in the annual formal recruitment process that occurs each fall. Formal recruitment is the primary way to join a sorority. It is a four-night process dedicated to finding the best-fit sorority for the potential new member.
Those interested in joining should plan to participate in the entire process. A Thursday night class, which may be in conflict with the first round of recruitment, is one of very few exceptions that may be granted to this, and those who have a Thursday night class should certainly plan to attend the Sorority Social on Wednesday night. Those with other conflicts for Thursday, Friday, or Saturday should wait to participate in informal recruitment with chapters still recruiting after the formal process is completed.
Please note that this formal recruitment process is the primary way by which women join sororities at MSU and anywhere else, for that matter. Immeditely following this process, "total," or the cap on chapter membership, set. This means that, after Formal Recruitment, some of our chapters will not be recruiting any longer. For the best chance to join a sorority, it is highly recommended that women participate in this process.
Online registration is now available. Below is a sample schedule of what Fall Formal Recruitment Weekend may look like.
Sorority formal recruitment requires potential new members to pre-register online. This allows us to keep potential new members better informed. Potential new members can register up to the first day of formal recruitment Thursday, September 6. There is a $20 fee for recruitment ($25 after August 1), which may be paid by credit/debit card online, in person by check, or by sending a check made payable to MSU Panhellenic Council to: PHC Recruitment, 173 Centennial Student Union, Mankato, MN 56001.
