Change email address in D2L Brightspace

Why do I have the wrong email address in D2L Brightspace? My email address isn’t correct in D2L Brightspace Why does my email address have a .2 after it?

The D2L Brightspace email is automatically pulled in from the official Registrar's records. This is an automatic process and cannot be changed. Here is some information to help you navigate your email (MavMail/Office 365) connected to D2L Brightspace.

 

Most faculty, emeritus, and some teacher's assistants will notice they have two email addresses at our institution:

  • firstname.lastname@mnsu.edu
  • firstname.lastname.2@mnsu.edu (Note: There may also be some other number or a dash then a number, etc...)

These correspond to two different email inboxes. You can log into each inbox by using these log in credentials:

  • Faculty/Staff Email Log in: StarID@minnstate.edu
  • Student/Emerita Email Log in: StarID@go.minnstate.edu

Both inboxes use your StarID password to log in.

To log in to your Student/Emerita inbox:

1. Open a new Private Window or Incognito Browser.

2. Navigate to mavmail.mnsu.edu, Click the log in button.

3. Enter YourStarID@go.minnstate.edu, click Next.

4. Enter your Star ID password, Click Next. Note: You may have to follow some setting up steps before your inbox appears.

5. You can tell that your inbox is your Student/Emerita inbox by clicking the icon with your initials or profile picture in the upper right corner of the screen. It will display your name and email. If you see a @go.minnstate.edu, this is a Student/Emerita inbox.

 

To log in to your Staff/Faculty inbox:

1. Open a new Private Window or Incognito Browser.

2. Navigate to mavmail.mnsu.edu, Click the log in button.

3. Enter YourStarID@minnstate.edu, click Next.

4. Enter your Star ID password, Click Next. Note: You may have to follow some setting up steps before your inbox appears.

5. You can tell that your inbox is your Staff/Faculty inbox by clicking the icon with your initials or profile picture in the upper right corner of the screen. It will display your name and email. If you see a @minnstate.edu, this is a Staff/Faculty inbox.

 

If you do not wish to check both of your email inboxes, you can take the following actions:

1. Forward email from your emerita or student account to your staff/faculty email address. You cannot forward email from a faculty/staff account.

2. Create an automatic reply on that email inbox that directs people to the email you prefer.

3. Add an email signature to the account you do not use that directs people to the email you prefer.

 

Changing the email in D2L Brightspace

D2L Brightspace automatically pulls in email information based on roles assigned in the ISRS Registration system. This process/priority cannot be changed. You can learn more about this in this Minnstate knowledge article. What you can do is assure you are checking both of your inboxes (see above) or forwarding your student inbox to the faculty inbox to avoid missed emails.

 

If the user only has student enrollments (or they are not listed as a Teacher of Record) email is pulled in to D2L in this priority order:

  1. Student/Emeritus email
  2. Faculty/Staff email
  3. Personal email

 

If they have a listing in ISRS as a faculty (Teacher of Record) their faculty/staff email is pulled into D2L in this priority order:

  1. Faculty/Staff email
  2. Student/Emeritus email
  3. Personal email

You can add a personal email address to your account by contacting the Registrar’s office to update your official record.
