What company do you intern for and what is your job title?

I work as a teaching intern in the Department of Gender & Women's Studies at Minnesota State Mankato.

What is one important skill you learned during your internship?

During my current internship, an important skill I have learned is how to respond with patience. Often a student requests some information they easily could have found somewhere else or they are not as professional in their writing when they should have been, but it is my job to still assist them in a very friendly and supportive way as I never can know the reason why a student did not find the information or wrote the way they did. Thus, I patiently respond to all my students to make sure they have the resources they need to be successful.

Did the internship prepare you or make you excited about a career in that field?

This internship helps me a lot for my future career. Even if I might not be completely sure as someone who pursues a double major in what field I want to end up, I know that one day I want to become a professor and thus, this teaching experience as well as the insights that I gain from the various interactions with my students and the background work students are never exposed to, are very useful and beneficial for me. I already feel much better prepared for my future endeavors.

If you could choose your dream job, what would it be?

My dream job as of now would be to become a professor in higher education to teach my students tools and knowledge they can utilize to solve the pressing issues of our world. We are all operating in various systems of oppression and so many people around the world are suffering. I want to teach future students the confidence in themselves to finally free all people from suffering and oppression.

What is the best tip you can offer other international students trying to secure an internship?

I encourage everyone to be creative and think outside the box. Yes, we all have our dream jobs and positions and favor certain imaginations and wishes, but the reality is cruel and if you remain open-minded to other possibilities, you might find an outstanding internship opportunity, even if that would not have been your first choice. It is those unforeseen life circumstances that teach us a lesson and provide an invaluable experience to us. So, do not think too narrow and look into all directions when trying to secure an internship.

STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN AN INTERNSHIP OR CO-OP MAY SUBMIT INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCE, INCLUDING A HIGH-QUALITY PHOTO, FOR POSSIBLE INCLUSION IN POSTS ON LINKED, INSTAGRAM, AND THE KEARNEY CENTER NEWS PAGE. INFORMATION PRESENTED IS STUDENT-SUBMITTED.
