The Center for English Language Programs (CELP) has been helping international students immerse themselves in American culture while preparing them for academic success through quality English-language instruction for nearly a decade. The name of the program has changed a few times, but the mission remains the same. The center provides English as a Second Language (ESL) courses that help non-native English speakers develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills to ensure a smooth transition into American college life.

When the pandemic hit, CELP, along with other academic departments, needed to adjust to the new reality of offering courses online. Though it was initially challenging for students and instructors to transition to studying online, everybody adjusted, and the courses were offered online for almost four semesters. We are glad to announce that in Fall 2021, we will finally offer face-to-face classes, along with FlexSync and online classes. One hundred students from Chuo University in Japan will be participating in a three-week online program via Zoom. A group of students from Meiji Gakuin University in Japan will be joining our regular face-to-face classes via the magic of FlexSync and Zoom, and we are thrilled to finally meet our old and new students face-to-face in our classrooms, in the lower level of Morris Hall. Regardless of the way the students will be attending, we hope it will be a great experience and the beginning of great friendships for all of them.

Interacting with others, building new positive relationships, and socializing are as important for international students, as studying (or maybe even more important!). That is why, here, at the Center for English Language Programs, we thrive to introduce our students to other students at MSU, Mankato, domestic and international. This is done via the Language Partners Program and social events on and off-campus. The Languages Partners Program matches students enrolled in the Intensive English Program (IEP) with domestic and international students to practice English in a stress-free environment. The partners meet twice a week to chat, socialize and attend social events together. Another way to meet new people is to attend social events that we organize. We are excited to be able to take our students on trips again to the Mall of America, Valleyfair, baseball, and hockey games, movie nights -  fun, friends, good times are waiting for the IEP students.

By the way, we are often referred to as the IEP, but did you know that the IEP is just one of the programs offered by the Center for English Language Programs? In addition to offering regular IEP classes to degree-seeking students, but we also offer a variety of short-term customized programs online and face-to-face to local and international partners.

As the new semester is right around the corner, we are looking forward to all the fun and excitement that each new semester brings and meeting the new students as well as our alumni. Please stop by our office in Morris Hall 002 any time. We will be happy to see you!
