Building my Portfolio of Skills through Co-Curricular Activities

One of the experiences out of class that I think got me a step closer to being ready for future careers in the undergraduate research study that I completed this year.

My name is Lelti Asgedom. I am an international student from Ethiopia. I enrolled in Minnesota State University, Mankato in Fall 2018. I am currently a junior majoring in Biochemistry as part of the Pre-Med track. I am interested in applying to medical school once I finish my undergraduate degree.

One of the experiences out of class that I think got me a step closer to being ready for future careers is the undergraduate research study that I completed this year. This research study was about the binding effects of our muscle protein. This research study was funded by a grant received from the undergraduate research center at Minnesota State Mankato. The center helps students embark on their creative journey through academic research. It helps students gain research experience in their specific fields which could be useful in any future path.

The other experience that I value is my on-campus job as a Senior IT student consultant. When I first started working in IT, it felt like I was out of my comfort zone since my major is Biochemistry. The fact that it was out of my comfort zone made me work harder to know it and feel like I can handle any customer with IT-related issues that come my way.

The one thing I love about this job is that you can never know everything, there will always be an issue that is brand-new to solve. This challenges you and adjusts your skills in troubleshooting to figure things out.

In conclusion, the experience I got from the research study was priceless and aided me in developing the skills I need to pursue an internship or job in my field. Being a senior IT Student Consultant challenged me in knowing more about something that was way out of my sector but resulted in me enjoying every single part of it. These experiences above as well as many others in Minnesota State Mankato shaped me in becoming the well-rounded person I am now. It gave me skills that I will carry for the rest of my career path so, I will never regret that I chose Minnesota State Mankato.
