Nov. 14: Poet, Non-Fiction Writer Paisley Rekdal

Mankato, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato will host poet and non-fiction writer Paisley Rekdal (pictured) Thursday, Nov. 14 as the fourth of nine writers who will be on campus for this year’s Good Thunder Reading Series.

Thursday’s events open with Rekdal holding a workshop from 10-11 a.m. at the Emy Frentz Gallery, located at 523 S. 2nd St. in Mankato.

In the afternoon, Rekdal will hold a “Talk on Craft” from 3-4 p.m. in Ostrander Auditorium, located in Centennial Student Union on the Minnesota State Mankato campus.

Events will conclude with Rekdal reading from her work from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the University’s Centennial Student Union, Room 245.

All Good Thunder Reading Series events are free and open to the public.

Rekdal is Poet Laureate of Utah. She is the author of three books of nonfiction, including “The Broken Country: On Trauma, a Crime, and the Continuing Legacy of Vietnam”; “Intimate: An American Family Photo Album”; and “The Night My Mother Met Bruce Lee”; and six books of poetry: “Nightingale”; “Imaginary Vessels,” finalist for the 2018 Kingsley Tufts Prize and the Washington State Book Award; “Animal Eye,” finalist for the 2013 Kingsley Tufts Prize and winner of the UNT Rilke Prize; “The Invention of the Kaleidoscope”; “Six Girls Without Pants”; “A Crash of Rhinos. Appropriate: A Provocation,” a book-length essay examining cultural appropriation, is forthcoming from W. W. Norton. She has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Amy Lowell Traveling Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. She teaches at the University of Utah.

The Good Thunder Reading Series, in its 38th year, is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

The 2019-20 Good Thunder Reading Series also receives support from Minnesota State Mankato’s Department of English, College of Arts and Humanities, Office of Institutional Diversity, the Women’s Center, the Nadine B.
